FAQ
Chokes
My gun has been multi-choke modified by you, how do I order additional thin wall chokes?
You can place an order online for your custom thin wall chokes. We keep a record of the measurements of every gun we have multi-choked so are able to look it up with the gun serial number and make additional chokes. To place an order online visit here and choose the chokes you require, on the product page there is a section to add your gun serial number. Please allow up to 10 days for us to send your custom made chokes.
What are TEAGUE Thin Wall Chokes?
TEAGUE Thin Wall Chokes are a proprietary multi choke system created by us. In order to have these chokes for your gun, your gun will have been modified by ourselves in the past. This modification can only be done to fixed choke guns, if your gun is multi-choked at the manufacturers factory we can no longer multi-choke it ourselves. Thin Wall Chokes are unique in that the wall thickness of the choke is very slim, making the choke light in weight, and barely visible in the barrel when a flush fitting choke is used.
How to choose the right choke for your shotgun?
Many of the gun manufacturers have different choke systems and ways of identifying which system is on your gun. These can usually be found on the manufacturers website. If you can't determine which choke it is from this, then please view the product images on our website. All of the products on our website have a measurement next to the choke to show the length of the choke. Please compare these images to an existing choke in the gun. Take particular note of the overall length of the internal section of the choke, the thread position and the thread length. If you are still unsure of which choke to order, click here to use our choke finder.
Can your chokes be coated? How do I place an order for coated chokes?
Any of our chokes can be coated black or gold, however they are not a stocked item and would be a special non-refundable order. The surcharge is + £18.00 per choke and the turnaround is 4-6 weeks as the chokes are sent off to a third-party coating company in batches each month. They take a couple of weeks to turn around once there. (Used chokes cannot be coated as they react differently and the coating quality is poor).

Which shotgun choke has the tightest shot pattern?
The tightest choke is an Extra Full which has a .045" choke, most often used for targets the furthest away
Other choke sizes can be seen here - Choke Chart
Which shotgun choke is the most open?
Traditionally the most open shotgun choke is a cylinder, which is straight and has no taper.
We now do a "Super Cylinder" choke which is a negative taper so opens out further towards the end of the choke to create a wider spread of pattern.
Other choke sizes can be seen here - Choke Chart
Will extended chokes pattern better than flush?
Our chokes have a taper all the way through the choke, as opposed to other manufacturers who have parallel sections within the choke. This means the longer the choke, the longer and more gradual the taper inside the choke which leads to less pellet distortion, a longer shot string, and improved, more consistent, patterns. This means our extended chokes will provide a slightly better pattern, this matters less when the choke system of your gun already has such a long flush choke. People may also prefer flush so that the choke doesn't protrude from the end of the barrel.
Can I use ported chokes with steel shot?
Kindly note that at this moment we cannot recommend the use of ported chokes with steel shot as no testing has been done by ourselves to see how they cope with the higher pressures. We will be testing steel shot with ported chokes once the cartridge companies have consistent components and will update our guidance accordingly.
Multi-Choking
Do I need to send in the whole gun or just the barrels?
We would need the complete gun as guns are fired at proof as per of the multi choking process.
We always recommend the removal of the stock and forend wood when delivering a gun to us, given the forces that will be exerted on the arm during proof firing - please read document below regarding woodwork.
We do not accept liability under our Terms and Conditions for damage resulting from proof testing or shipping and carriage.
We check all guns upon arrival from customers and the proof house and notify customers as soon as possible if there is any noticeable damage. We advise all customers to check their guns upon return and notify us as soon as possible if there is any noticeable damage.
Do these chokes work with Steel shot or non toxic shot?
All of our chokes work with Steel Shot but we recommend that the maximum choke size for standard steel shot is 1/2 choke and for high performance steel shot we recommend a 1/4 choke maximum, then the larger the load the more open the choke. For Non Toxic & Bismuth a maximum 3/4 is advisable.
How long does the multi-choking process take?
The process of multi-choking takes approximately 4 weeks. Whether you drop the gun off by appointment or send via your local RFD (Please contact them for charges), the work will be carried out to the barrels, then the gun is reproofed at the Proof House and returned back to you.
I would like to have my gun multi-choked, what is the process?
Contact us by phone to book your gun in. Our lead times can vary throughout the year, but we aim turn around your gun within two weeks.
Deliver your gun to us. If you aren’t local to us we can arrange for a courier collection from a local registered firearms dealer.
Assessment and Measuring. Upon receipt we measure the barrels to check that the wall thickness will allow us to multi-choke the gun. The measurements are then stored for the production of your chokes and for future reference.
Multi-choking and choke manufacture. We then machine the thread precisely into your barrel, and manufacture bespoke chokes for your gun. Both are done to an exceptionally high standard of accuracy.
Reproof. Your gun will be reproofed at the proof house to ensure the barrel is still safe – this is a legal requirement.
Fit chokes and final finishing. This last stage ensures the chokes fit perfectly in your gun, and are flush with the muzzle.
Delivery of your gun. You can either collect your gun from us, or we can arrange delivery to yourself or a local registered firearms dealer.

Will multi-choking affect the value of my gun?
Multi-choking is now a common feature of many new guns and favoured by most shooters. We multi-choke many fixed choke guns ranging from the inexpensive to high value best English bespoke guns. When it becomes time to sell the gun, we tend to find that TEAGUE multi-choking actually adds value to the gun compared to similar non multi-choked guns.
Choke choice
Which choke should I use for English Sporting?
We recommend using 3/8 and 5/8 for a good all-round combination when shooting English Sporting or FITASC, switching to a more open choke like cylinder and skeet for closer targets like rabbits or driven targets showing the underside of the clay.

Technical
I have a choke stuck/seized in my barrel, how can I get it out?
The first approach to this is to submerse the whole choke area of the barrels in a jar of diesel and soak for 24 hours, then try to remove the choke as normal with our taper key. If this doesn't work then the barrels should be returned to us where we may be able to remove the stuck choke with a reamer. As a last resort we can carefully machine the choke out from the gun without damaging the barrels or thread. To return the barrels to us please book an appointment during opening hours or send via your local RFD (Please contact them for charges).
Is my gun proofed for steel shot?
To check if your gun is proofed for steel in the U.K. please look at the proof marks on your barrel. If there is a fleur de lys symbol on them, this means it has been proofed for steel. Please contact us with pictures of the proof mark if you need help identifying this symbol.
If you would like your gun proofed for steel shot, we can arrange this for you. Please contact us to do so.
Having your gun proofed for steel shot does not mean that your gun won’t suffer damage if you use steel shot, proofing just means the barrels are safe to fire steel shot loads through. It is common, particularly on older guns, that continuous use of steel shot through barrels can cause score marks inside in the barrel and eventually lead to irreparable damage. Newer models of chrome-lined barrels are less likely to be damaged. In any case, please speak to the manufacturer of the gun for advice.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are to use our chokes for steel, we recommend only going up to a ½ (Modified) choke. As a rule of thumb for converting choke constrictions when using steel please see the below table.
Choke Conversion - Lead to Standard Steel Shot |
|
Lead Shot |

Cylinder | Cylinder |
1/4 (Imp. Cylinder) | Skeet |
1/2 (Modified) | 1/4 (Imp. Cylinder) |

Tips & Advice
Do I need to lubricate the chokes, if so with what?
You should lubricate the chokes every time they are inserted into the gun. Proper lubrication will prevent chokes becoming stuck in the barrels. We recommend only using TEAGUE choke grease for best results, our grease is synthetic and does not solidify with temperature.
